What is project seafair?
SeaFair is a project that is dedicated to encouraging diversity in sail training through empowering youth to take on unique, maritime-based educational experiences.
Our initiative this year focuses on providing Indigenous youth with day-long sailing experiences aboard tall ships, where participants can learn firsthand about maritime industry.
We will be working closely with local Sail Training Organizations (STOs) to create a project that connects communities with the broader sail training community through accessibility and affordability. We are furthermore working with the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Center and the Workforce Warriors Organization to develop culturally responsive curricula which will be incorporated into the project.
The tall ships in the Canadian fleet sail on traditional Indigenous waters and dock at Indigenous coastal territories. It is not only just, but right, to offer these important sail training opportunities to Indigenous youth through SeaFair. SeaFair’s daylong sailing programs are more than just educational outings; they are transformative experiences that introduce young Indigenous participants to the vast possibilities and career pathways within the maritime sector.
Through SeaFair, we aim to ignite a passion for the maritime industry, while also fostering a deep appreciation for our maritime heritage and the importance of preserving our oceans.
